Due to the sagging health sector in Africa, health assistants find it difficult to effectively handle all healthcare needs like providing best doctor recommendations, available appointments that meet the user schedule, and book their next appointment for them. Increase in the use of mobile phones by people has reshaped expectations of delivery across all customer experiences in apps and software.
Customers expectations are industry agnostic and expect experience as good as experiences from design-led brands like google or apple. They expect expertise on product with information together with customer centric experiences user driven features and simple delivery. Customers have busy lives and are looking for ways to seek advices from the perfect expert at their conveniences.
On this basis, I began to dig deeper on ways to provide solutions by carrying out user research
I performed competitive analysis, qualitative and quantitative research in forms of interviews, google reviews and surveys to gather sentiment of the average person and understand the challenges of users. There was an interview session with 2 participants via video call; male and female inclusive, and also undertook an online survey and got feedbacks from users with similar pain points.
My objective is to paint a user persona which would represent the demography of users in Nigeria. Majority of the interviwees search symptoms on Google, practice self-medication or visits the pharmacy when they are sick due to fast customer service, none has used an health app to book a doctor's appointment, but has used other apps like Calendly to book a meeting.
60% of interviewees prefer in-clinic visits but would like to book an online appointment prior visit to avoid queue.
In this research, I employed the SWOT analysis method to analyze direct competitor named ZOCDOC after reading reviews on App Store and using the app myself.
Direct Competitor
Strength
Accept insurance
Allows user video (online) consultations
Opportunities
Health tips
User health information storage
Pills & appointment reminder
Threats
Newer Competitors
Incompetent/Scam Doctors
Household/Private
Pharmacies and Chemists
Self-medication
Weakness
Appointments can get rescheduled or declined in the last minute and no way of notifying the user
User have to retype their health information each time they book appointment
Users cannot set reminders of appointments made outside Zocdoc neither can they set pill reminders
Calendly is an app used to schedule appointments with HRs, Clients with flexibility of sending meeting link directly to client email, or accessing meeting directly from the app.
It has the ability to reschedule, cancel meetings to accomodate user's day.
However, the app still allows people book appointment even on days when Users says they are not available.
During the course of my research, my main constraints is inability to access foreign health apps that have similar usabilty as there isn't local apps of similar function.
Navigable:
Navigation options are clear and consistent and can be easily used by users to find contents in different sections and determine where they are in the app. Interactive elements are easy to identify.
Readable & Understandable:
Simpler words are used to make it easier for less-educated users to understand. Readable and larger fonts size was used to enhance the operations of information of the user interface.
Form elements includes clearly associated labels.
Icons are used along texts and Colors alone was not used to convey meaning, astericks in addition to color was used for required form fields, labels colors to distinguish form status.
Predictable:
he app appears and operates in a predictable way.
Contrast Ratio:
Sufficient contrast was ensured between foreground texts on images, buttons and background. The app visual design priniple laid emphasis on main elements of the contents such that it was built withthe feel of calmness and trusthworthy as blue is a very common color in the medical field. The palette expanded to green and red to distingigh different states and categories
